Peer Review Process

Peer Review Process

Upon receipt of a submission, the Cadernos editorial team will review the text file. The team will reject any manuscript that does not meet the journal’s standards or follow the rules described in the Author Guidelines without further evaluation of its scientific contribution.

The journal will peer review manuscripts that meet its standards. Members of the Cadernos editorial team or experts in the field, invited by the editor, will carry out the evaluation. Referees will not know the identity of the author unless the manuscript is accepted for publication. The journal requests that referees submit their reviews within 30 days, although delays may occur. Using the journal’s evaluation form, referees can recommend: 1) full acceptance, 2) conditional acceptance (requiring revisions), or 3) rejection.

  • If the recommendations are positive, the editorial team will consider the manuscript for publication;
  • If the recommendations are negative, the team will reject the manuscript, and the author may not resubmit it, even with revisions;
  • If the referees disagree on acceptance or rejection, the editor will make the final decision, and may consult a third referee if necessary;
  • If the referees recommend conditional acceptance (requiring revisions), the Cadernos team will return the manuscript to the author, who must resubmit it by the given deadline. The team will then re-evaluate the revised manuscript and, if the revisions are extensive, may initiate a new review process with a new deadline.

In all cases, the Editor has the final authority to accept or reject a manuscript and will provide a reasoned decision. Normally, the journal will notify the author via the Cadernos system or by e-mail within 120 days (approximately). However, there may be delays in sending the manuscript evaluation (more than 120 days), either because the journal needs time to find suitable referees, or because the referees request additional time.

Although Cadernos encourages referees to provide arguments and reasons for their decision (acceptance or rejection of the manuscript), objective conditions may not always allow this. In some cases, referees can only submit their answers to the objective questions of the evaluation form and their decision of acceptance or rejection – without additional comments.
